The Full Story

Music as Medicine was originally founded as a club in 2020 during the midst of the pandemic. Since then, Music as Medicine has been dedicated to performing at multiple hospitals throughout the Houston area, bringing the joy of music to the community. Our mission is to provide healing and comfort to those in need of it through the power of music. We strive to bring people together to share in the joy of music.

Our organization began with just 60 members who signed up initially and 25 active members. We have performed at Methodist and Memorial Hermann, spreading the love for music to the community. There was an impressive turnout to kick off the second year of the club. Though now in person, the club still maintains their monthly meetings and monthly video submissions.

Mary Shim

Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Mary Shim, age 17, is a freshman at Princeton University and a passionate violinist since the second grade. With a group of 60 high school members, she founded the DeBakey Music as Medicine Club during her freshman year.

Diya Gaur

Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer

Diya is the Chief Technology Officer of Music as Medicine. With her passion for music, service, and technology, Diya dedicates herself to enhancing Music as Medicine's online presence through the Music as Medicine website and social media platforms.

Hailey Hua

Co-Founder and Chief Financial Officer

Hailey Hua, a senior at DeBakey High School for Health Professions, is an aspiring singer who loves to perform and has play guitar, with experience of six years. She joined Music as Medicine at the start of her freshman year, and has held leadership roles for over two years.
